New Hire: Joseph Guimaraes, U.S. Navy Band

 

Joseph Guimaraes won a position with the U.S. Navy Concert and Ceremonial Bands and began playing with the bands in Fall 2020. In this role, Joseph will perform for a variety of ceremonies in Washington, D.C., as well as on tours throughout the United States. Born in Brazil and raised in Boca Raton, Florida, Joseph received a Bachelor of Music degree from the Lynn University Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Georgia. His primary teachers include David Zerkel, Carol Jantsch, Kenneth Amis, and Jay Bertolet. He received a Silver Medal at the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium & Tuba Festival, a gold medal at the NERTEC Solo Artist Competition, and is a Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans fellow at UGA.

New Hire: Matthew Gordon, U.S. Navy Fleet Bands

Matthew Gordon has recently won a euphonium position with the United States Navy Fleet Bands. He will begin basic training in June. Afterwards, he will spend several weeks at the Navy School of Music in Virginia Beach before receiving his station and officially beginning the job. His duties will include performing in the Wind Ensemble, Parade Band, and chamber ensembles. Matthew, a native of Mount Prospect, IL, is currently a 4th-year undergraduate majoring in music education at the University of Georgia, and he will graduate in May. He has been active in numerous solo, chamber, and mock audition competitions, including winning 2nd prize in the student division at the Falcone Festival in 2016, advancing to the finals in multiple ITEA regional competitions in 2020, and winning 3rd prize in the inaugural Stars and Shipes e-mock audition in the summer of 2020. His principal teachers have been David Zerkel, Dr. Matthew Shipes, Josh Wirt, and Jared Bulmer.
