New Hire: Andrew Doub, Louisville Orchestra

Andrew Doub has recently won the position of Principal Tuba with the Louisville Orchestra and began playing with the ensemble in November 2018. Andrew is a founding member of The Brass Project, a chamber brass ensemble whose playing has been described by the Philadelphia Inquirer as “superb.” He completed two years of undergraduate studies at West Virginia University before transferring to the Curtis institute of Music. He studies with Paul Krzywicki, who is retired from the Philadelphia Orchestra, and with Craig Knox, principal tuba of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

New Hire: Jim Andrus, Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra

Jim Andrus is the new Principal Tubist of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra. He began playing with the ensemble in October 2018. In addition to performing in the full orchestra concerts, Jim plays in the Boulder Philharmonic Brass Quintet in community and educational concerts throughout the greater Boulder, Colorado area. Jim is a native of Salt Lake City, Utah and is in the final year of his Bachelor of Music program at the University of Utah, where he studies with Gary Ofenloch. He has performed with the Utah Symphony Orchestra and has been selected as Principal Tubist at several esteemed music festivals, including the World Youth Symphony Orchestra at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, where he studied with David Zerkel and Philip Sinder, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute at Whistler, where he studied with Peder MacLellan. While in Canada, Jim was selected as one of several finalists in the festival’s concerto competition and made his solo debut with the University of British Columbia Chamber Festival Orchestra in the esteemed Chan Centre for the Performing Arts.

New Hire: David Childs, University of North Texas

David Childs is the new Professor of Euphonium at the University of North Texas. He began serving in this role in August of 2018, following the retirement of Regents Professor of Euphonium, Dr. Brian Bowman. David is an internationally renowned euphonium soloist and has performed on numerous occasions as a soloist with band or orchestra, in recital, and in some of the top brass bands in the UK. New Hire: Jace Vickers, East Central University

Dr. Jace Vickers is the new Assistant Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Low Brass at East Central University in Oklahoma. He began teaching there in Fall 2018. His duties in this position include teaching applied tuba, euphonium, and trombone; directing athletic pep bands; and conducting the Symphony Band. Dr. Vickers completed his Bachelor of Music Education degree at Troy University and Master’s and Doctoral degrees at the University of Oklahoma. An active performer and presenter, Dr. Vickers has performed with groups such as the Colorado Symphony, the Frontier Brass Band, the Norman Philharmonic, and the Redbud Brass Quintet. He previously held teaching positions at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Central Oklahoma. His students at these institutions have had success in concerto competitions, and MTNA competitions, and in performances at regional tuba/euphonium conferences.

New Hire: Alex Avila, Texas A&M University - Kingsville

Dr. Alex Avila has recently been hired as the Visiting Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Texas A&M University - Kingsville. He began this position in August 2018. His duties are to teach applied lessons in tuba and euphonium, teach low brass methods for music education majors, as well as direct the tuba/euphonium ensemble and oversee the TAMUK Chapter of the ITEA student organization. Alex received a bachelor's degree in Music Education from The University of Georgia and graduate degrees in Euphonium and Tuba performance from The University of Texas at Austin. He has won or placed in many solo competitions, most notably earning a gold medal in the Euphonium Artist Competition at the 30th anniversary of The Leonard Falcone International Tuba Euphonium Festival in 2015. In addition to his duties at TAMUK, Alex is a member of the innovative euphonium quartet, FivE and regularly tours with the group, presenting shows at conferences, universities, and public schools.

New Hire: Genevieve Clarkson, Oklahoma City University

Dr. Genevieve Clarkson is the new Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Oklahoma City University, a position she began in August 2018. Her responsibilities include teaching tuba and euphonium lessons, studio class, Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, and Brass Techniques Lab and playing in the Faculty Brass Quintet. Originally from Arlington, Virginia, Genevieve has served as the ITEA's Conference Manager since 2013, assisting with the 2014 and 2016 International Conferences in Bloomington, Indiana and Knoxville, Tennessee, and is currently assisting with preparations for the organization's 2019 Conference in Iowa City, Iowa. A student of John Cradler, Kevin Stees, Timothy Northcut, and Daniel Perantoni, Genevieve has played in regional orchestras across the Mid- and Southwest and toured with performing groups around the world. Prior to her appointment at Oklahoma City University, Genevieve served as the Lecturer of Tuba and Euphonium at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona.

New Hire: Aaron Campbell, University of Tampa

Aaron Campbell is the new Adjunct Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at the University of Tampa. He will begin in this position in Fall 2018. His duties are to oversee the private instruction of all tuba and euphonium students at the university, as well as perform with the faculty brass quintet. Campbell is an active freelance euphonium and trombone performer in the Tampa Bay area. He has performed regularly with various area ensembles including the Florida Wind Band (Tampa, FL), the Florida Wind Symphony (Boca Raton, FL), and as Solo Euphonium with the Brass Band of Central Florida. Campbell is a Besson and Lefreque performing artist.

New Hire: Geoff Durbin, Ouachita Baptist University

Geoff Durbin is the new Visiting Instructor of Low Brass at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas. He will begin serving in this role in Fall 2018. His duties include teaching private trombone, euphonium, and tuba; directing the Trombone Ensemble and the Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble; and teaching musicology. In addition to his position at OBU, Durbin is a member of Presidio Brass, based in San Diego, CA and is an XO Brass Performing Artist. He was the 2013 gold medal winner in the Euphonium Artist Competition of the Leonard Falcone International Tuba and Euphonium Festival. He holds degrees from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and the University of North Texas and is currently ABD at the University of Memphis.

New Hire: Joe LeFevre, Kansas City Symphony

Joe LeFevre recently won the position of Principal Tuba with the Kansas City Symphony. He will begin playing with the orchestra in September 2018. Prior to his appointment in Kansas City, Joe was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and a 2017 graduate of Michigan State University, where he earned a B.M. in Tuba Performance. His teachers include Phil Sinder, Mike Roylance, Gene Pokorny, Deanna Swoboda, Dennis Nulty, Jacob Cameron, and Bill Short. Joe has performed as a substitute with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and Lansing Symphony Orchestra and was a fellow of the Tanglewood Music Center in 2016.

New Hire: Aubrey Foard, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra

Aubrey Foard has won the position of Principal Tuba with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He will begin playing with the orchestra in Fall 2018. He also serves as Lecturer of Tuba and Euphonium at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and as Artist Faculty at the Brevard Music Center. Foard was most recently principal tubist of the Charlotte Symphony, where he had performed since 2012. He has previously held principal tuba positions in the Santa Barbara, West Virginia, Canton, Youngstown, and Albany Symphonies as well as with the Britt Festival Orchestra. He has performed as a guest musician with several other orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the North Carolina Symphony, the Louisville Orchestra, Arizona MusicFest, and as Acting Principal Tubist with the San Diego Symphony. Foard is a graduate of The Colburn School's Conservatory of Music, Rice University, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. His teachers include Norman Pearson, Fritz Kaenzig, Mark Lawrence, David Kirk, and Alan Baer.

New Hire: Ryan Robinson, Oklahoma State University

Ryan Robinson is the new Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at the Oklahoma State University Michael and Anne Greenwood School of Music. He will begin in this role in Fall 2018. He is currently the Principal Tuba of the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas (SoNA) and Principal Tuba of the Lawton Philharmonic. Dr. Robinson also serves as host of the Buffet Crampon USA Tuba Euphonium Academy. Prior to his appointment at OSU, Dr. Robinson held teaching positions at Oklahoma City University, Tarleton State University, and Southwestern Oklahoma State University. His degrees are from the University of North Texas (BM, DMA) and Northwestern University (MM).

New Hire: Aaron Tindall, Sarasota Orchestra

Aaron Tindall has recently won the position of Principal Tuba (tenure-track) with the Sarasota Orchestra after serving this last season. In addition to his duties with the SO, Aaron is the Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at the Frost School of Music - University of Miami, and the Principal Tuba & Faculty at the Eastern Music Festival. Aaron has been the acting principal tubist of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, held the principal tuba position with the Aspen Festival Orchestra where he was an orchestral fellow, and has collaborated as guest tubist with orchestras such as the Teatro alla Scala Opera and Ballet Orchestra - Milan Italy, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - Australia, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Naples Philharmonic, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and the New World Symphony. Tindall has been a prizewinner of many competitions (solo & chamber) across the world. He has also been a two-time finalist in the prestigious Concert Artist Guild Competition, and released three highly acclaimed solo recordings; Transformations (Awarded two 2017 Global Music Awards), This is My House...(Awarded two 2015 Global Music Awards), and Songs of Ascent.

New Hire: Carson McTeer, West Virginia Symphony

Carson McTeer has recently won the position of Principal Tuba with the West Virginia Symphony. He will begin playing with the orchestra in September 2018. In addition to his duties with the WVSO, Carson teaches Tuba and Euphonium at West Virginia University and Miami University (Ohio). He previously served as principal tuba of the Cincinnati Symphony for 8 seasons. Carson has also performed with the New York Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, Houston Symphony, and Colorado Symphony among others.

New Hire: Danny Rowland, University of Wisconsin - Platteville

Dr. Daniel Rowland is the new Assistant Professor of Low Brass and Instrumental Music Education at the University of Wisconsin - Platteville. At UWP, he will teach applied tuba, euphonium, and trombone; instrumental music education; and low brass methods. In addition, he will be a member of the faculty group Ensemble Nouveau. Previously, Dr. Rowland was Lecturer of Tuba/Euphonium at Valdosta State University and was principal tubist of several regional orchestras. Dr. Rowland received degrees from Florida State University, University of Northern Iowa, and Millikin University.

New Hire: James Hicks, Towson University

James Hicks is the Adjunct Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Towson University. He began serving in this role in September 2017. At Towson, James teaches private lessons and master classes, performs with the faculty brass quintet, and conducts the Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble. James is the principal tuba of the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C. and performs with the United States Navy Band Brass Quintet and the United States Navy Band Tuba Quartet. He has also performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and many other prestigious ensembles. In addition to his work at Towson, James has presented lectures at various universities and international conferences. From 2015-2017, he served on the Board of Directors for ITEA and has written or assisted with several articles for the journal. James received a B.M. from the University of Georgia and an M.M. from DePaul University. His primary teachers include David Zerkel, Floyd Cooley, and Gene Pokorny.

New Hire: Tom Lukowicz, University of North Alabama

Dr. Tom Lukowicz has been named the Assistant Professor of Low Brass at the University of North Alabama beginning in the Fall 2018 semester. Prior this appointment, Lukowicz was serving as a visiting faculty member at North Alabama. Dr. Lukowicz will be responsible for all aspects of the entire low brass studio, including lessons, studio class, trombone quartets, and tuba/euphonium quartets. He also serves as the Principal Tuba of the Canton Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of New York, and on the faculty of the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps.

New Hire: David Earll, Ithaca College

Dr. David Earll has been appointed as the Assistant Professor of Tuba/Euphonium at Ithaca College. He will begin teaching there in Fall 2018, and his primary duties will include teaching applied tuba/euphonium, conducting tuba/euphonium ensemble, teaching tuba/euphonium literature and pedagogy courses, coaching chamber music ensembles, and performing with the faculty brass quintet. David currently serves as the Assistant Professor of Tuba, Euphonium, & Trombone at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He also currently performs with Sam & Dave's Brass Extravaganza, the UW-Platteville faculty chamber group Ensemble Nouveau, the Tallgrass Brass Band, and has also performed with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, the University of South Dakota Faculty Brass Quintet, the Boston-based Nautilus Brass Quintet, and the Paris-based Opus 333 - Quatuor de Saxhorns. David also maintains a busy schedule as a soloist, chamber musician, and clinician throughout the United States and abroad. His most recent tours have included appearances in New York, Texas, Virginia, Tennessee, the greater Midwest, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, and Hong Kong. David completed his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Tuba Performance at Arizona State University under the tutelage of Dr. Deanna Swoboda and received the 2016 Clifford Bevan Award for Excellence in Research for his dissertation. He also holds a Master of Music in Tuba Performance from Arizona State University, where he served as a Teaching Assistant for Professor Sam Pilafian, and a Bachelor of Music in Music Performance at the University of South Dakota. David Earll is a Willson Tuba Artist, and performs exclusively on the Willson 3200 F Tuba and the Willson 3050 CC.

New Hire: Matt Hightower, University of Kentucky

Matt Hightower has recently accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Tuba/Euphonium at the University of Kentucky. He will begin teaching there in Fall 2018, and his primary duties will be teaching applied tuba/euphonium, conducting the tuba/euphonium ensemble, teaching tuba/euphonium methods, and performing with the faculty brass quintet. Hightower is currently on the faculty of Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Prior to his appointment at TAMUK, he held positions at Murray State University and The University of Texas at Austin. As a professional tubist, Hightower’s performance experience covers a wide range of chamber, orchestral, and solo music that spans three continents and nine countries. Recent solo recitals include Baylor University, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, the 2017 & 2018 South Central Regional Tuba/Euphonium Conferences, and The United States Army Band Tuba/Euphonium Workshop in Arlington, VA. He is the tubist with the Corpus Christi Brass Quintet and a founding member of the Atlas tuba quartet. Hightower has also performed with the Bloomington Camerata Orchestra, The Columbus (IN) Symphony, The Evansville Philharmonic, The Iceland Symphony Orchestra, The Jackson Symphony, and David Baker’s 20th Century BeBop Band. In addition to performing, Hightower is an award-winning composer. In 2010 he was named the winner of the KMEA Intercollegiate Composition Contest. Many of his arrangements and original works are published through Potenza Music and Absolute Brass Publishing. Hightower earned a B.M. in Music Education from Murray State University, and an M.M. in Tuba Performance from Indiana University, and a D.M.A. in Tuba Performance from the University of Texas at Austin. His primary instructors were Ray Conklin, Daniel Perantoni, and Charles Villarrubia. Hightower is a B&S Performing Artist.

New Hire: Matthew Shipes, Angelo State University

Dr. Matthew Shipes has been appointed to the position of Assistant Professor of Music at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas as of August 2017. His main duties include serving as the applied instructor for tuba, euphonium, and trombone majors, teaching weekly studio classes, coaching brass chamber groups, as well as teaching sections of Brass Methods and Introduction to Music. Matthew was previously a euphoniumist with The United States Air Force Band in Washington, DC, where he had the opportunity to perform for President Obama, several foreign leaders, and for hundreds of ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery. In addition to winning and being a finalist for several international and national competitions on euphonium, tuba, and trombone, he has appeared as a guest artist and given world-premiere performances at events like the US Army Band’s Tuba-Euphonium Workshop, and both regional and international ITEA conferences. Matthew received his D.M.A. from The University of Georgia in December 2014.

New Hire: Fletcher Mitchell, Queensland Conservatorium

Fletcher Mitchell is the new Lecturer in Euphonium at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music - Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. He began serving in this position in February 2018. Fletcher is an Australian-based euphonium soloist and low brass educator. He has given recitals, master classes, and workshops at international brass festivals and conferences as well as performed as a guest soloist with wind ensembles, brass bands, and orchestras across the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Australia. He has been a full time euphonium player with the Royal Australian Navy Band for 11 years and is currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Southern Queensland researching Australian euphonium works. Fletcher is a Yamaha Performing Artist and Clinician.

2018 ITEA Teaching Award Recipient Donald C. Little


The Board of Directors of the International Tuba Euphonium Association is pleased to announce that Donald C. Little, Regents Professor of Tuba at the University of North Texas, is the recipient of the 3rd annual ITEA Teaching Award. 

Donald C. Little, Principal Tuba and Cimbasso of the Dallas Opera Orchestra, performs frequently in the Dallas-Fort Worth area with many orchestras and ensembles including the Sundance Brass, Texas Winds Brass Quintet, and UNT Faculty Brass. During summers he performs with the Summit Concert Band and Blue River Brass of Summit County, Colorado. Little has performed and recorded with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Opera Orchestra, Dallas Symphony and the German Radio-Symphony Orchestra of Berlin. He is a former member of the Chicago Civic Orchestra, Colorado Festival Orchestra and York (PA) Symphony. He has also performed with the Chicago, St. Louis, San Antonio, Baltimore, and Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestras as well as the Dallas Wind Symphony. He retired from the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra in 2001 after serving as Principal Tuba there since 1980. Now in his fortieth year of full-time university teaching, Little is Regents Professor of Tuba at the University of North Texas College of Music and was previously a faculty member at the University of Northern Iowa. Former students hold or held teaching and performance positions throughout the world, such as in the Hague Orchestra of Holland, the Orquesta del Principado de Asturias of Spain, the Mississippi Symphony, Memphis Symphony, Colorado Springs Philharmonic, Oklahoma City Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Breckenridge Festival Orchestra, Disney World, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Band, the U.S. Navy Band of Washington, DC, and numerous universities and colleges.



Donald Little has been active in the International Tuba Euphonium Association throughout his career and has served the association in many capacities since 1975 including the offices of President, Past-President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, Conference Coordinator and Chairman of the Board of Directors. He presently serves the association as a member of the Honorary Advisory Board.

Mr. Little has transcribed, arranged, edited and/or composed numerous published works for the tuba, euphonium and brass ensembles with Belwin Mills, Southern Music Company, Kagarice Brass Editions and other publishers. His solo and chamber music publications continue to receive thousands of performances annually at professional, faculty and student recitals, contests, competition and other venues throughout the US and the world. A respected pedagogue and low brass specialist, he contributed instructional materials and solo editions for the tuba and euphonium to Belwin Mills', Medalist Band Course and Contemporary Band Course, which includes his text for high school and college tubists, Practical Hints on Playing the Tuba.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Donald grew up on the southern New Jersey seashore in Wildwood Crest where his first tuba teacher was Bernard V. Switzer, Jr., who was also his band director at Wildwood High School. He received his B.M.E. at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, where he studied with John Melick, and M.M. at Northwestern University where he was a student of Arnold Jacobs. He has also completed further graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music as a student of Cherry Beauregard. Don is married to Laura Bruton, principal violist with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. They reside with their family in Argyle, Texas.
The ITEA Teaching Award is presented annually to an ITEA member who has been teaching for at least 10 years. Letters of nomination are submitted accompanied by letters of support from current and former students and professional colleagues. Members of the ITEA Board of Directors review the submitted materials and vote to determine the recipient.

The inaugural (2016) recipient of the ITEA Teaching Award was Prof. David Zerkel, of the University of Georgia. Prof. Phil Sinder, of Michigan State University, received the 2017 ITEA Teaching Award.

Vacancy Announcement: ITEA Membership Marketer


The International Tuba Euphonium Association (ITEA) seeks applicants for the new position of Membership Marketer. This is a paid position with a monthly stipend of $325 ($3900 annually). The Membership Marketer will be primarily responsible for the growth, retention, and engagement of the ITEA membership. The Membership Marketer will work closely with the ITEA Executive Director, Web Editor, Journal Editor, Conferences Coordinator, Chapter Coordinator, and Social Media Coordinator.  The Membership Marketer will serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the organization and will be invited to participate in meetings of the Executive Committee.
